Ahmed Kamara
Ahmed Kamara, from Seria, hails from the Northern Province, Falaba District, Mongo Chiefdom, Seria Town, Sierra Leone. He emerges from a rich musical lineage, with his father, a Djely Ba, and his mother, Djely Musu, instilling in him the art of storytelling, singing, and cultural heritage. In the Mande empire that crosses modern-day Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Mali, a Djely Ba is a historian, storyteller, poet, musician, singer and sometimes advisor to kings. Growing up in a nurturing environment characterized by love, respect, unity, and humility, Ahmed inherited not only a tradition of music but also a legacy of hunters, warriors, and storytellers. Ahmed's musical journey began formally in 2014, where he began singing, songwriting, and drumming in the Mandingo "Mamaya" style, a kind of folkloric traditional music that uses indigenous instruments. Throughout his career, Ahmed has collaborated with notable artists including Joss Stone from the UK, Freetown Music Festival, Ma-Dengn Beach Festival, and the Thumbs Up Peace Festival. As an artist with Telem Uncommon Sounds, Ahmed blends his traditional Djely Ba styles with modern music genres — including recent dancehall and reggae collaborations with Jamaican artists — to create fresh and unusual sounds. With his roots deeply embedded in tradition and a vision to share the soul-stirring rhythms of Sierra Leone with the world, Ahmed Kamara continues to captivate audiences with his evocative music and storytelling prowess.
